Oh, DAMN.

This reminds me that I read and greatly appreciated the Connor fic, but was not awake enough to write a comment which didn't sound like "Stoney! You finally wrote something for me to read!" and in addition haven't done the rec. Bad, bad me. I've been punished, though, because the raccoon totally ransacked my lilly barrel night before last.

Anyhow: up until I got married, I saw a zillion movies, most of the ones you saw and a ton of the ones you hadn't. Mom was a movie hound, and there was always a after-school-before-the-news movie show, where I saw stuff like Mildred Pierce and The Oxbow Incident and Laura; I took three quarters of Cinema classes where I saw a ton and a half of silents, and then I dated a guy whose roommate ran the movie series at TESC and who thought it was perfectly reasonable to watch six Fellini movies in three nights.

And then I got involved with a Star Trek geek who grew up in Hollywood and didn't want to go to "Those Kind of Movies" (other than SF) and then we had kids and I ended up seeing very few movies as a result.

Anyway, hi, how ya doing, know anywhere close to Missoula where I'd be guaranteed to see pronghorns?

Julia, monsterously distracted and in no way ready to spend next week away from home, dammit

Oh, noes to the lillies!! (And thank you for reading that story!)

I feel like I've seen Laura, but I can't remember. I might be thinking it's something else. I do that. As for pronghorn, anything along Rock Creek - pretty day hikes there, too. If you feel like climbing St. Mary's or Lolo's, (bring water and stretch) you'll most likely see a few. Eagles and moose, too.

It's coming up soon, GOD! *hugs and bolsters you up*

Laura's the one with the huge painting of the dead girl (Laura) and the haunting "Laura's theme".

Man, wasn't Giant the biggest trainwreck of a movie you ever saw?

I mean. James Dean. LOVED him. But Taylor and Burton? My GOD who let them onscreen?
stoney321
Aug. 18th, 2006 01:40 am (UTC)
Waterworld would be the biggest trainwreck. :D BUT. Burton and Taylor together are AWFUL together.

HI!!

How to count how many movies you bolded:

Go to edit mode. Cut and paste the whole thing into Word. replace the opening bold symbol with the opening bold symbol and do it for "all". It will tell you how many replacements were made.

Movies you must see:

It Happened One Night. Still one of the best comedies ever.

The Lady Eve. Barbara Stanwyck decides to dupe poor schmuck Henry Fonda out of everything. A New Leaf was a remake of this.

Cat People. Proof positive that the scariest movies never show anything but suggest everything.

Shadow of a Doubt. Hitchcock's personal favorite.

Lone Star. I don't want to give anything away. Just see it, you'll love it.

And to make a correction. No one was killed during the filming of Ben-Hur. That occurred during the the orginal silent version.

OH! See, I just figured it was an urban legend, re: Ben-Hur. So it DID, but in the original (which I haven't seen.) Did you ever hear the one about the gaffer than got hung during Wizard of Oz? And if you look in the background right before the Witch pops up in Munchkinland, you'll see him in the upper right corner?

Basically, someone was back there working, but no one died. Urban Legends are fun.

*adds all of those movies to my queue, YAY!*

I've never seen the silent version either but I have seen the chariot race section. It's incredible. I'm not surprised someone got trampled, it's so furious and out of control.

Damn you've seen a lot of these. BUT. In the interest of giving you something to do the next time Mr. S is out of town and the kids are in school, put these on your list:

Dead Man ~ Jim Jarmusch film with Depp (!) and Gabriel Byrne and Robert Mitchum and John Hurt and Iggy Pop (!) and and and. Just watch it.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown ~ Unless I've completely missed your sense of humor, you will love this.

O Brother ~ Really? Really, really? This is me with my mouth hanging open. Clooney as Odysseus? Give it a shot.

Adaptation ~ So messed up. But so, so good. Nicholas Cage will blow your mind in it. Scout's honor.

Oh, and you're totally right about Poltergeist. I STILL have to make running leaps onto my bed to make sure that fucking clown doesn't get my feet.

I have to go now. I'm having an old friend for dinner.

ARGH, you know what?? All but Dead Man are on my list of things that I SHOULD BE WATCHING, but for whatever reason, haven't. *Netflix* And Dead Man wasn't on there, because I didn't KNOW about it. *Netflixes*

Poltergeist screwed with my head, man. You moved the headstones, but you left the bodies!!

Iron Sulfide? Fool's Gold? Your anagrams are showing, Dr. Lector.

I loved "O Brother". And the soundtrack is great also.

One amusing thing I noticed in that movie - apperently Clooney cannot lip synch to save his life.

Hahahaha, I will look for that! Also, I have several songs from the soundtrack, and I LOVE it.

OMG. Brando. Streetcar. OMG. He practically jump-started my puberty with that BEYOND hot performance.

I-I try not to think about the later years.

Oh! And the Lolita-hate. Mind if I ask? I mean, I probably can guess, but mind if I ask?

Brando was GORGEOUS in that movie. But that movie doesn't work (unless they did it on PURPOSE, and I don't think they did... I'm talking about all the casting, btw)

Lolita: I hate that it's about a child molestor. I hate that it's labeled a "black comedy." I hate that it's the child molestor's POV, and the idea is to get the audience to sympathize with him. I hate that the argument about the story is that it's not "moral or immoral, it's only a story. What YOU do is the morality."

It's about a CHILD MOLESTOR. So. :) *calms down*

Have you ever read the book Lolita? It's from his pov there also (and it is a black comedy), but you do know he's a monster. I've never seen the Kubrick version, it's just about the only movie of his that I haven't.

Part of the problem with the movie is Lolita is much too old, but Kubrick didn't have a choice. There was no way he was going to be allowed to cast a 12 year old.

I've seen both versions, unfortunately, and read the book. I *had* to read the book for an American Lit class. I saw the Kubrick version because I loved Kubrick (even though he treats women as mannequins in ALL of his movies - we're objects, which bugs the shit out of me), and then my friend rented the Jeremy Irons/Swain version to see what was different, and I walked out in the scene where she's in his lap and he's rocking her and is basically masturbating against her ass.

I mean, I know that Dominique Swain is *of age* and so forth, but I know that in the book she's prepubescent, and that fucking disturbs me. It's a trigger for men who think like Humbert Humbert, and if you know me at all, you know I don't have many boundaries. I mean, I really REALLY don't have lines in the sand. Except for child molestation. Not for titilation, and that's what it is. Maybe not intentionally, but it has become that, if that makes sense.

I would say he treats EVERYBODY as objects in his movies. Kubrick is a pessimist regarding mankind and doesn't see much good in us. Why is why the most human character in 2001 is the computer. And why AI is a train wreck -he wrote the script and then "happy endings" Speilberg took it over.

Oh, and the fact that Lolita is considered a "black comedy" makes me so sick, I can barely type this sentence.

And I KNOW it is thought of that way, and I can't for the life of me understand why. And, I KNOW FROM FUNNY. All types. I mean, this is ME. That's one of the most depressing books I've ever laid hands on.

well, it's not ha-ha funny. I haven't read the book in a long, long time but many people consider the book as about several things, one of them being the clash of Eurpoe (Humbert) vs America (Lolita). And it certainly plays with language a lot.

I would also say that HH is probably the most untrusty narrator I've ever read.

Recent revelations (in the past... year? Two?) about Harrison Ford's character. Was he or wasn't he a replicant? And I'm now debating going to the movies today, or staying home and re-watching Blade Runner. :)

Okay, I'm 99% sure that Ridley Scott came out with what he intended...

Replicant. (No? I'll google that. I may have gotten that off the Aintitcoolnews board, which sometimes isn't to be trusted...)

One movie title that made me laugh was The Bank Dick. because I imaingined it as a 70s porno. "I'd like to make a deposit, please." *cue bass line*

Are You Actually

Reading this? I'm just curious. Because that's really detail-oriented of you. Feel free to stop reading. But you can see that there's more here, so are you going to keep reading? Really? That's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. No, really. I'm not being sarcastic, why do you get like that? See, this is the problem I have with your mother - yes. YES. I'm going there. It's time we put all of our cards on the table.

I love you, why are you doing this? After all we've been through? You don't have to be like this. You know, still reading. You could be baking a pie. And then sharing it with me.
