Living with ASD folks

I care about this particular Alot[affect
So my sister is staying with me for a week while my step-mom gets a much-needed vacation and wow, am I glad that my son has graduated and has all this free time on his hands. :) (They get along like a house on fire.) [Primer for my sister and why this is a big deal]

Last night was hard for her, because she wasn't quite sure if she would go home. My brother, who was her constant companion, has moved out into his own apartment and it's devastated her. Fortunately, because my son lived with my parents for a while, they have a closer relationship and she's been his little shadow (and he loves it).

But wow, it's like having a toddler again.

On our to do list for THIS MORNING:

  • the 3 Bs (bed - make, breakfast - eat, bath - take one after exercise)

  • meds

  • stretching and breathing exercises (she is VERY SERIOUS about her breathing, okay? Ha.)

  • jump rope and jumping jacks (she has an outfit for this, and we must have perfect posture with our hands on our hips in between sets)

  • more stretching and breathing (this is a lot of exaggerated exhaling and nodding for a job well done)

  • dry hair (this is her favorite part of the day. She has AMAZING hair. It's ridiculously thick and glossy and long and lovely.)

  • math - addition problems

  • auditory training on her iPad

  • math - subtraction problems

  • vocalization training on her iPad

  • chores, tbd by me - Sweeping! Oh, how she loves chores like sweeping and dusting

  • phonics cards

  • fun games on her iPad

  • Simon Says with me (more jumping jacks, hopping on one leg, yadda yadda)

  • read one chapter in her book

  • listen to me read one chapter in her book (making her say it with me)

  • Brainquest

  • help me make lunch

  • eat lunch

  • AND THEN A NAP, omg

Every day. This is just THE MORNING. (She has lost a lot of her cognition from seizures and a stroke last year. My s-mom works extra hard to keep her brain engaged so that she can gain lost ground. Her speaking isn't clear unless you know what to listen for, and we have to make her speak to us or she gest locked inside her head and it's almost impossible to draw her out and engage. But! She's seemingly happy to have new walls to do these same tasks, and my house has kids who like painting her fingernails. :) Plus, I don't say things the same way her mom does, so she has to think harder. Whee!

Also, the cats are VERY interested in her, and she is NOT HAVING IT. (Cats are unpredictable and move in ways she can't anticipate.) So I hear loud "AHHHHH! LAURA!" from the house and go to find her with her hands in the "holding my skirts/Eek, a mouse!" position and a cat rubbing on her ankle. LOL. (She isn't wearing a skirt, mind. But that is what you do when frightened by small creatures, duh. ;)

Cats love those who refuse their love, that's just science.

I'm putting my son on chapter reading/flash card duty because he loves it and she loves him and I can go lie down with a cold compress on my head for 15 minute until the next session starts.

(All of this is a long way of saying that it might take me a while to respond to emails, comments for the next 6 days.) <3

Good luck! ♥

Thank you! I might need to take something illicit to keep up with her... :D
Nov. 20th, 2013 05:15 pm (UTC)
The "the cat just wants to pet you" doesn't work this time? Bless.

I am so glad your sweet boy is there to help. I am so glad to understand better about her world. I no have words good today, but <3 <3 <3

Betcha she's having a good time eating gooood food. :)
Nov. 20th, 2013 05:17 pm (UTC)
Hahaha, you remember! Yes, we've had delicious things and I'm going to have her help me make hummus to have that as a dip instead of ranch dressing. =/

To you, toooooooooo! (OMG, we ate lunch and she carried her plate to the sink, wiped it off, then wiped off the table where she ate and I gave my son a dirty look. SHE WILL SHOW THE BOY THE WAY TO CLEANLINESS.)

Wow your step mom is amazing. AMAZING.
Is your sister still drawing/painting?
Nov. 20th, 2013 06:46 pm (UTC)
She really, really is. <3

My sister IS still drawing and painting! We have an hour scheduled for that this afternoon. :D After baking cookies, of course. I need help measuring. :)

I am very glad to hear that. I think her artistry is very lovely.

Ayyy - I'm exhausted just reading that list, and it's only the MORNING list! But how great that she can re-connect with your family in a way that can only happen when you live together for a bit.

Cats love those who refuse their love, that's just science.

Hahaha. I rescued a kitten over the summer and lately he's been REALLY trying to get our Grumpy Old Lady cat to like him. It's kind of breaking our hearts how hard he's trying...each time she responds first with a queenly touch-me-not pose, then hisses and growls. Poor guy then scuttles off for pets from the family to help reestablish his self-esteem.

Oh my gosh, I just made ridiculous noises thinking of that poor kitten looking for love in all the wrong places... Hahaha

Thank you so much for sharing this...

And I'm loving the part where she sets a good example for your son with the dishes!
Nov. 21st, 2013 02:15 am (UTC)
Ha, I'm loving the example, too! Man, she got to sweeping, and WOW, the child is thorough. I almost lost the top layer to my flooring, she was so thorough! :D

You and yours are a constant stream of awesome-sauce. I hope you have a great time with your sister and that your s-mom comes back refreshed.
Nov. 21st, 2013 02:15 am (UTC)
So far so good, and she's having a GREAT time with my son, so that's even better.

Nov. 20th, 2013 07:47 pm (UTC)
Sounds tiring but it's great you have a TA on hand this time around.
Nov. 21st, 2013 02:17 am (UTC)
LOL, that's perfect: TA! Oh, how glorious it is to pass off jobs...
Nov. 21st, 2013 12:32 am (UTC)
I wish you luck and vast resources of energy.

Also, reading back, I'm stalled at your step mother's raisins in spaghetti sauce. Just...stalled, I tell you.
Nov. 21st, 2013 02:18 am (UTC)
Much thanks!

RIGHT?!?! Is that not the most amazingly horrible idea ever?! (Remember the scene in Better Off Dead where the mother nervously laughs and says, "It has...raisins in it." WE SAY THAT EVERY TIME WE TELL THE STORY.)
Nov. 21st, 2013 01:23 am (UTC)
Your step-mom is quite a person. And so are you for allowing her to have this vacation.

I am tired just reading the list, but I also know how much love and joy there is there.
Nov. 21st, 2013 02:20 am (UTC)
She is AWESOME. My son just said, "I don't know how Grandma does this every day." Yep, RESPECT, CHILD.
Nov. 21st, 2013 03:05 pm (UTC)
After reading that list I think I need breathing exercises of my own. What a great thing you've got your son to help out! I have to laugh so hard at the cat thing. Any time we have people over who are allergic, or who just don't like cats for some reason, the cats are on them like GLUE. You're right, it's science!
Nov. 21st, 2013 05:29 pm (UTC)
WHEW, I am amazed DAILY by the sheer volume of energy that goes into a day of caregiving and truly believe my step mom is a SAINT. <3

Hahaha, CATS ARE SO CONTRARY. If they weren't, though, I bet we wouldn't love them half as much. Anyone can get a dog to love them, but a cat? That takes skill. Or hatred. :D
Nov. 21st, 2013 10:18 pm (UTC)
You are the awesomest sister/daughter ever to awesome. <333333333333333333333

It's fantastic that your son and she get along. He's so amazing (I just keep thinking, my god, whatever specialty he decides to have when he becomes a nurse will be SO LUCKY to have him!).

And wow, wow. I need a nap just after reading that list. That's all before lunch, you say? *swoons on fainting couch*

In conclusion: *LOVES*
Nov. 21st, 2013 10:28 pm (UTC)
I AM BEGINNING TO REPORT MY DAY LIKE JACQUES COUSTEAU. "Day sree. Ze muzzah watches over her cubs by collapsing in a ditch where zey frolic upon her exhausted body. And yet... zey are safe."

(And seriously, my son is going to be an AMAZING nurse. He's so patient and caring with people.) <3 <3

Are You Actually

Reading this? I'm just curious. Because that's really detail-oriented of you. Feel free to stop reading. But you can see that there's more here, so are you going to keep reading? Really? That's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. No, really. I'm not being sarcastic, why do you get like that? See, this is the problem I have with your mother - yes. YES. I'm going there. It's time we put all of our cards on the table.

I love you, why are you doing this? After all we've been through? You don't have to be like this. You know, still reading. You could be baking a pie. And then sharing it with me.
