Bullet points for Monday

  • Thank you so much for all your well wishes for us and our family/friends down in Houston. Everyone came through, and everyone has some kind of damage, but nothing that can't be fixed, so that's pretty great. (Up here we just got 10+ hours of hard rain, but no massive flooding, which was fortunate.) The house next door to my husband's childhood home had a sailboat in the back yard. In case it's not clear, it's not their sailboat. The houses along the waterfront got pretty banged up - some completely gone. No one we know, though. The power is starting to come back in fits and starts along the coast, so that's pretty swell. It's a good thing so many people bugged out, or there would have been more problems. Last I heard, the Strand (historic Galveston) is still under water, and a beach between Kemah and Galveston is completely gone.

  • I got stung by a wasp yesterday, and the good thing is it turns out I'm not so dangerously allergic to them like I used to be. (Which was good, because we couldn't find the EpiPen. Errr...) Side note: antiperspirant (old school with aluminum in it) works WONDERS on a bug bite. Crazy, no? Takes out the itch, pain, and some of the swelling.

  • turns out that Sally Derg is just as freaked by grasshoppers as I am. Reading between the lines: on our walk this morning, I leaned forward to inspect what I thought was a weird leaf (I wasn't wearing my contacts) and a GINORMOUS GRASSHOPPER leapt at my face, wanting to lay its babies in my eye sockets, I'm sure, and Sally jerked back on her leash to get away from it. YOUR JOB IS TO SAVE ME, buster. No treat for Sally today! (Clearly I need to start bringing a golf club on my walks.)

  • I'm trying to get a list together of companies that I think I could get to donate items for a raffle to raise money for my 3-Day walk. I've got a local grocery store, Starbucks, a local restaurant, and... Any suggestions? Feel free to hit me with any you can think of.

  • In about 72 hours I'll be on a plane to NYC to play with dovil until Sunday afternoon. Good food, friends, museums, and liquor? BEST WEEKEND EVER. I haven't seen her for two years, so this is exciting. Stupid globe being huge...

  • I got linked on MetaFilter (thank you again, elfgirl for the heads up!) and think that's pretty swell, too

  • Tangentially, the BFF sent me a DVD and t-shirt for the exploitation remake (got that?) of "Trapped By The Mormons!" Ahahahah! It's a silent film from the 20s that was remade in a tongue-in-cheek manner. The Polygamist (natch) Mormon man is a vampire, the polygamist brides in the new version are ZOMBIES. Made for me, or freaking MADE FOR ME?

  • Somehow this all makes me want to write purpley-overwrought Palin/Cullen porn. I CAN'T EXPLAIN HOW MY BRAIN WORKS, OKAY?

  • True Blood. Is it just me, or is Anna Paquin using her body in a really WEIRD way? I'm losing interest in this show, fast.

Hey, did you know about this? Congratulations?

My wasp sting from last week, when I apparently managed to manually squeeze all the venom from a baldfaced hornet into the palm of my left hand, has a scabby bit and still itches like hell. Also, if my Grandmother's superstition about itchy palms is true, I'm due thousands and thousands soon.

Julia, must go photograph things and pack things and clean things and launder things and yell at the Manchild to clean his stupid bathroom
Sep. 15th, 2008 04:32 pm (UTC)
And I see you have. Blame Monday, and really really needing new bifocals.

Julia, off to put in contacts and get started on the Last Chance For Big Laundry Festival which is the last week of Celestial Summer
Sep. 15th, 2008 04:30 pm (UTC)
True Blood has started? Huh.

Oh, I'm so glad you are okay. So glad to hear from you.

Now, you and Doveeeevil shriek and hug each other for me! And giggle inappropriately while in museums, you hear? Also, I think you should randomly pants people.

And def. take golf club and eye-socket protecting sunglasses. Well, you might need those dog-walking, too.

::off to watch Mormon thingy::

Yep - ep 2 aired last night. I'm giving it two more eps, then bailing if it doesn't get any better.

The husband and I had so much fun in NYC last month. I'd never been, so we barely scratched the surface. We treated each day like a walking picnic. Bagel with smokes salmon shmear, pain au chocolat, green papaya salad, naan, whitefish salad, panisses - in one day...It's a good thing there was all that walking!

Palin/Cullen porn? *blink blink* I would totally read it.

Yeah, Paquin seems to be accentuating the boobage in every scene, arching her back oddly. It's distracting. Well, at least it's something weird to watch...
Sep. 15th, 2008 08:17 pm (UTC)
SWEET. I'm totally writing it, and there will be an audience of you and me. :D

Man, how fun is NYC? I'm getting so excited. I love going places with good friends and Dovil is SO fun to travel with.

Mmmmm, the food. CANNOT WAIT.

Word to the wise, yet another reason to not sit in the nosebleeds at football games: GIANT KAMIKAZE GRASSHOPPERS!

The best part is when they try to dive bomb up your skirt. *shudders*

Clearly you need me to send you my golf clubs!

Very happy to hear you're OK! (LJ is definitely impacting on my life - it's very different watching the news when someone you 'know' is affected...)

Somehow this all makes me want to write purpley-overwrought Palin/Cullen porn. I CAN'T EXPLAIN HOW MY BRAIN WORKS, OKAY?
That is... too awesome for words! I'd TOTALLY read that. Twilight-crack!fic is too much fun for words, but very addictive, as I now know. (And I worry about my brain too. A lot.) Which btw reminds me - could you give me a pointer as to how fast Renesmee grows? Does a month correspond to a year maybe? And how soon can she talk, and read etc? Just vague guidelines, but it'd be HUGELY appreciated! (I vowed to myself that I wouldn't write anymore, but... crack! Can't... stop... the bunnies...)

Hi! re fundraising:

the very best places for donating things to your raffle are the small, entrepreneur type places. I run a silent auction for my PTA and I get all my donations from those places, mostly restaurants who give a gift certificate that I auction off. I made like $1300 last year -- of course, it's also thanks to the donors who come to the silent auction.

another place to look is used book stores, comic book stores, to see if they have overstock you can package.... and crafters/artists who are sick of lugging that one thing around....

and of course, the quality white elephants and unused specialty appliances of friends -- yogurt maker anyone?

and of course YOU could auction your movie poster !

re more established businesses, like Starbucks, you generally have to see what their manager is like, but a lot of places support solicitations if they are done through the national offices -- you can generally email them. Then that takes probably 6 weeks to process. Does the 3 Day provide a list of corporate sponsors who might be willing to support you?

It's so great that you are doing it -- congratulations!

and so glad to hear you and your loved ones are all ok

Excellent excellent excellent!

Thank you very much. Some local restaurants have dinner packages for me, a local wine shop has a few bottles for the cause, and the Mr. is going to have a poker night with a 25 dollar buy in, the person with the most chips at the end gets a little something, too. Oh! And I have a night at a W for a couple, too.

Thank you SO MUCH! Wonderful suggestions that really helped!

I'm very glad to hear your family is alright. I was away all weekend visiting my Dad who has NO internet access. I don't know how I managed.

Thank you, sweetie!

Good to know that you and yours are okay. Have a blast in NYC. If you write Palin/Cullen and it is purple and glorious I will build a temple in your honor.
Sep. 15th, 2008 08:23 pm (UTC)
Thanks! My own temple?! Can I have money changers at the front? :D

It was a TON. Plus side, I can practically hear my tomato plants growing today. :)

Oh, they're so awful!! I just hate them. They FLY!! Truly they are the devil's own handmaiden.

Isn't that funny? The shirt's just big enough to sleep in, so she'll see it every night and morning, hahahaha. <3

has NOTHING to do with your enrty, btw
Because you seem to be the QUEEN of recipes: Do you happen to have any good potato recipes? I'm flat broke until Saturday, but I do have a bag of potatoes to sustain me until then. Recommendations? Thus far I have already made my own french fries, mashed potatoes, and hash browns with asiago cheese. :3
Sep. 15th, 2008 11:33 pm (UTC)
Re: has NOTHING to do with your enrty, btw
YUM. (But aww, I'm sorry about the broke part.)

Let's see: if you have some sour cream, add that to the hash browns and maybe some green onion (if you have it) and bake it. Top it with some more cheese (whatever you have) and those are funeral potatoes. :)

If you have any ham, layer thin slices of potatoes on a casserole, a layer of ham, more potatoes (just keep going with what you have) then mix some eggs (the more the better - I usually use 8) add some black pepper and asiago to that, pour it all over the potato/ham and bake at 375 for 30 - 45 minutes, or whenever the potatoes are sot and the eggs set. Fritatas are delish.

Toss some cubed potatoes with olive oil, black pepper, and rosemary and roast in the oven.

Potato soup! Chicken broth (or veggie broth) can of cream of chicken, several handsful of shredded cheese (or a bunch of your asiago), black pepper and salt to taste. If you can add a can of beer to it, that makes it even better. Sometimes I'll add a can of cheese soup mix if I don't have shredded cheese on hand.

Good luck!

Sounds like your in a very good place today. :-) Despite rains and other disasters. :-P

I am! The sun has been out all day, drying things up. It was nice to sit outside with a book.

True Blood. Is it just me, or is Anna Paquin using her body in a really WEIRD way?

I could think of some weird ways to use her body.
Sep. 16th, 2008 02:26 am (UTC)
SHe's totally hot. But she has weird body language in this show.

But yeah - her body is slamming. (THIS GAME, DAVE. Are you watching!?!?)

"Is it just me or is Anna Paquin..."

Dude, she went to the school of Sarah Michelle Gellar: How to Make Your Arms Work in Every Scene. She totally flails her arms in windmills. I'm ALMOST losing interest...but not yet. NOT YET! *clings desperately*

Hope you have a FANTASTIC trip in NY! I'll miss you but I'll get over it because I'm not that clingy. Except in my asterisked physical description up there. SHUT UP.

Are You Actually

Reading this? I'm just curious. Because that's really detail-oriented of you. Feel free to stop reading. But you can see that there's more here, so are you going to keep reading? Really? That's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. No, really. I'm not being sarcastic, why do you get like that? See, this is the problem I have with your mother - yes. YES. I'm going there. It's time we put all of our cards on the table.

I love you, why are you doing this? After all we've been through? You don't have to be like this. You know, still reading. You could be baking a pie. And then sharing it with me.
