Title: Where There's Smoke [2/12+]
Rating: PG-13 generally, but moving to NC-17 in places (will point out, accordingly, for those averse)
Pairing: Kurt/Blaine, Wes and David friendship, mentions of former Finn/Rachel
Word Count: 10,120/100,000
Warnings: None, really, aside from future mentions of homophobic treatment by a parent (I never use slurs. Never.)
Summary: Fireman AU, set 7 years after graduation. Kurt is Kurt, except that he never met Blaine Anderson. Blaine grew up in Brooklyn with his mother and firefighter father. Rachel and Kurt have graduated NYADA, Kurt gained a Masters from Tisch, and now they're in their first post-college apartment together ready to tackle their dreams. Unfortunately, Rachel never learned how to properly cook and almost sets their new house on fire. Enter Dreamy McFirepants.
A/N: This wouldn't exist without the most amazing editor a person could ask for, flaming_muse. Any remaining errors fall squarely on her my shoulders. :D Also, I am ultimately a romantic, I don't like character death, I love writing happy endings, and Kurt and Rachel live in my dream place in Carroll Gardens (it's modeled after a real piece of real estate there.) I tried to be as accurate as a visitor to NYC can get, but did take a few liberties with neighborhood bodegas. Um, I also have a huge thing for firemen and I make no apologies for that.

'David said for me to bring a friend, so I am.' Kurt dead-panned, 'A friend. Rachel, in straight that means Santana, someone that plays on both sides and has a nice set of boobs. I'm fairly certain the handsome, straight, black fireman didn't intend for you to bring your Dandy.'Collapse )

I love this so much, did you hear the little squeek I made when I refreshed the page and saw it had been updated.

Also, you are doing such an amazing job with the fireman vibe, like that deep connection they have to each other, it's very well written.

Your Kurt is adorable...and his friendship with Rachel (also well done characterization) is lovely.

Love It!!

Aww, you're just lovely, thank you so much for this! I'm a bit overwhelmed (and loving it.) <3

I just LOVE Rachel and Kurt together, LOVE. (Not as much as Blaine/Kurt, but you know it's coming.)

I adore this fic so much, I want to draw hearts around it! I love the relationship between Kurt and Rachel, and Wes and David.

Is it tomorrow yet?
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:25 pm (UTC)
Go ahead and draw hearts! I'll bring the glitter. I'm so pleased to hear you're enjoying it, thank you!!

And haha! Soonish? ;)

I don't even date and I know that this entire chapter of 'is he interested, no he isn't, yes he is, no he isn't, oh god what am I doing' mess of insecurity and desire is accurate as hell!

I love the foundations you've laid for all the characters (such as Wes and David and the other firefighters) as well as the undercurrents to Blaine that we have yet to see.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:25 pm (UTC)
I may have drawn on some personal experiences for inspiration.... Ha!

I am just beyond happy to hear that it's all coming across on the page, thank you so very much for reading and commenting!

BLAINE ANDERSON WHAT ARE YOUR SECRETS? And are they worth not hitting that fine, fine guy with all the force of your adorable smiles? Which means hi I am intrigued and oh god, the awkward feeling when you are hanging in a place and totally don't feel you belong, I have lived that experience and it is supremely strange.

Rachel+Kurt's friendship for the win and I love that you brought Wes into this story because he is my secret favorite Warbler next to Thad, who suffers in silence with his raging Blaine mancrush.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:27 pm (UTC)
IS THAT EXPERIENCE NOT THE WORST? Also, I am SUPREMELY PLEASED that you are reading and enjoying. Hahahaha, Thad almost got a part, but I didn't want to bring ALL the Warblers onto the force... (They're in Queens. SPIN OFF!)

Ha, thank you, really.
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:26 pm (UTC)
AHHHH, This is COMPLETELY AMAZING. I already have so much love for this I can't even tell you. Can't wait to read more.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:28 pm (UTC)
YOU ARE THE AMAZING ONE! For reading and commenting, THANK YOU.
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:32 pm (UTC)
I knew that he wouldn't have given Blaine his number. That's so typical. xD
I'm so intrigued by Blaine. I really enjoy this story, can't wait for more!
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:29 pm (UTC)
Poor derpy Kurt! I can't blame him, but yeah. COME ON, KURT. DIGITS.

Thank you so very much for reading! More soon.
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:39 pm (UTC)
As I was reading this 2 fire engines pulled up right outside my house. I considered going out and flirting with them, but then I realised I'm sitting in my pjs and have been throwing up all day, so instead I just perved from my window and pretended I was in your fic.

Can't wait for the rest.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:31 pm (UTC)
Oh, you poor thing, I hope you get better soon!

And hahaha, don't you know that for the past month every time I see the firefighters (I'm right by a station, too) I glance around looking for Blaine? LOL.

Thank you for reading, and really, I hope you get over your crud quickly.
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:40 pm (UTC)
I think I read the first part some time ago... and I'm happy you keep writing. Your Kurt is so amazing, I just want to give him a hug.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:31 pm (UTC)
Well...the first part went up yesterday? But I'm happy you're happy with the story! (I want to hug him, too.)

Oh Kurt, you are so precious. I liked this chapter a lot. Firehouses are families, no doubt, so it's totally believable that Kurt would be having a difficult time integrating himself into the family. They're all probably protective of Blaine, despite wanting him to get out there and find happiness.

Anyway, looking forward to your next chapter!
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:32 pm (UTC)
They really are families, yes. And it's such a...masculine family - not easy for Kurt to find the sweet spot, so to speak.

Thank you so much for reading! And it will be up first thing in the morning!
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:44 pm (UTC)
This is so great, I just adore the way you write the banter for both Rachel and Kurt(lol the castle in Bavaria bit and the arguing about the headstart time XD) and Blaine and Kurt! It's a shame Kurt didn't sing though, he definitely would've scored a phone number faster than you can say Blackbird, but I figure they'll be back at the bar soon enough.
Can't wait for more!
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:35 pm (UTC)
Ha!! I am SO HAPPY the Castle in Bavaria bit worked! Sometimes when you think something's funny, it doesn't always translate.

Oh, those firemen get together at that pub a few times a month, so it'll show up again. :) Thank you for reading and commenting!
Dec. 13th, 2011 07:53 pm (UTC)
Somehow I missed the first part, but I just read both parts so far. How did I not know that a Klaine Fireman AU was missing from my life?

I'm waiting anxiously for the next part.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:37 pm (UTC)
It's like realizing you've been living on cat food when there is DELICIOUS FOOD out there, right? Oh, firemen, you are always so delightful to me. :D

I'm so glad you are reading and enjoying, THANK YOU!
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:25 pm (UTC)
This is actually amazing!! I can't wait for more! I love the way you depicted rachel's and kurt's relationship. :)
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:37 pm (UTC)
Thank you very much! I'm glad to hear that Rachel and Kurt's banter is a fun read, they certainly are fun to write. :)
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:28 pm (UTC)
Yay. :D

This makes me happy.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:38 pm (UTC)
I'm happy that you're happy! Thank you so much.
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:46 pm (UTC)
I am clapping my hands with delight that we still have ten more chapters to go! God, I'm loving this story! I was disappointed that Kurt didn't sing, though, but I'm hoping that means there will be another trip to Smokey's (heh, awesome!) in the future where he WILL sing!
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:53 pm (UTC)
YAY! You do have waaaaay more. Lots of long, chewy chapters ahead. :)

Kurt is going to need to feel comfortable singing with this group, I bet. And remember, these guys meet up a few times a month...

(Thank you for sticking with the story!)
Dec. 13th, 2011 08:57 pm (UTC)
Ahh, Kurt, you're supposed to give the hot fireman you're number!! I have a feeling they'll find each other soon enough, though. ;D
Best thing ever to read at 7 am but now I have to wait for another chapter tomorrow. Ohhh, I'm loving this fic so much.
I'm just going to happily picture fireman!Blaine for the rest of the day now. ♥
Dec. 13th, 2011 09:05 pm (UTC)
He was too distracted! I can't blame him, Blaine's pretty handsome. :)

Aussie, eh? Well, maybe make a late night of it so you can get it sooner? Ha, cheers, mate!

(I figured Aussie or Kiwi with that time stamp.)

Are You Actually

Reading this? I'm just curious. Because that's really detail-oriented of you. Feel free to stop reading. But you can see that there's more here, so are you going to keep reading? Really? That's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. No, really. I'm not being sarcastic, why do you get like that? See, this is the problem I have with your mother - yes. YES. I'm going there. It's time we put all of our cards on the table.

I love you, why are you doing this? After all we've been through? You don't have to be like this. You know, still reading. You could be baking a pie. And then sharing it with me.
