Fic: Where There's Smoke AU, [3/12]

Author: Stoney
Title: Where There's Smoke [3/12+E]
Rating: PG-13 generally, but moving to NC-17 in places (will point out, accordingly, for those averse)
Word Count: 3600/100,000
Warnings: None, really, aside from future mentions of homophobic treatment by a parent (I never use slurs. Never.)
Summary: Fireman AU, set 7 years after graduation. Kurt is Kurt, except that he never met Blaine Anderson. Blaine grew up in Brooklyn with his mother and firefighter father. Rachel and Kurt have graduated NYADA, Kurt gained a Masters from Tisch, and now they're in their first post-college apartment together ready to tackle their dreams. Unfortunately, Rachel never learned how to properly cook and almost sets their new house on fire. Enter Dreamy McFirepants.
A/N: This wouldn't exist without the most amazing editor a person could ask for, flaming_muse. Any remaining errors fall squarely on her my shoulders. :D Also, I am ultimately a romantic, I don't like character death, I love writing happy endings, and Kurt and Rachel live in my dream place in Carroll Gardens (it's modeled after a real piece of real estate there.) I tried to be as accurate as a visitor to NYC can get, but did take a few liberties with neighborhood bodegas.

Kurt had already made good headway in the morning's crossword; she would be left with 'lavabo - ten letters' and 'Trammel of baseball - fifteen letters,' and Kurt had absolutely no idea what it could possibly be. And didn’t care. He grimly noted that there were two clues that involved coffee and four that involved love or relationships. Even the NYT crossword puzzle was mocking him.Collapse )

"Sweaty exertion made him think of Kurt?" I will now forever think of Klaine sex whenever I exercise. Thank you. No, really, thank you; I hate exercising. Now I'm kinda looking forward to it. :) Much luv!

Yes! Every time you need to work out, just picture Captain Blaine Anderson working up a sweat, wondering what Kurt would think about him lying on the weight bench, working on his chest and arms. ;)

And you're welcome. Ha! <3

The return of snarky!Kurt. I love Kurt like this, you write him so flawlessly.

Seriously, how these two tip toe around each other is precious! They're totally smitten! Also, I may have wanted Kurt to go back with Blaine and cook for Blaine and the rest of the crew 'cause it seems to me those firemen need some help in the cooking department, and maybe I sort of want domestic Klaine! (I know, it's too early!)

I love victory dances! I might have done one when I got back home this evening and saw this.

[So this is is like the third date, so I'm guessing holding hands are okay XP]

Dec. 15th, 2011 01:57 pm (UTC)
HAHAHAHAHA! You not only got a hand hold, but a peck on the cheek. ;D [This fic is totally into you, wouldn't shut up about it. It was all "Whiterose likes me, she really likes me!" and I go "DUH, now let me sleep, I have finals!" but then the fic stared out the window at the moon sighing. OKAY WE GET IT, YOU TWO.) :D

OH. SAY. Someone likes domestic Kurt-Blaine moments? just keep reading. Whee! As always, THANK YOU!

Yay for mini chapters that precede monster chapters!! Looking forward to tomorrow!!

Loved Kurt's smackdown of Giovanna and the beyond adorable scene in the store when Kurt gave Blaine his number.

However, this was my very favorite part: "There was absolutely nothing wrong in Kurt's mind for a grown man to do a little victory dance in the privacy of his own home."

I have a perfect visual in my brain for this moment!!

I'm hooraying that you are looking forward to more today!

I kinda love the bump in the store, that's probably wrong of me. BUT I LOVE THESE BOYS. I'm so glad you do, too, and that you're reading, THANK YOU!
Dec. 15th, 2011 04:57 am (UTC)
still love love love this.
by the way, did you base the cafe bittersweet off of anything? only asking because there's a family owned cafe called bittersweet in CA that matched your description completely.
that aside this fic has me and my friends flailing out of control, can't wait for tomorrows chapter!
Dec. 15th, 2011 02:02 pm (UTC)
Still love love that you do!

And ha! With the exception of maybe two places (Behaviour is an actual men's boutique in Manhattan) almost every "location" is a real location in Carroll Gardens (Brooklyn) or neighboring Bed-Stuy - which is where Bitter Sweet is. Real place! But that is AWESOME that there's one in LA!! Very cool!

Aww, tell your friends thanks from me, and while you're at it, thank yourself from me, too. ;D

There was absolutely nothing wrong in Kurt's mind for a grown man to do a little victory dance in the privacy of his own home

Nothing wrong at all. If I was Kurt, I'd be doing a heck of a victory dance.

And this was lovely. So lovely. I'm really enjoying having a great story to look forward to each day (it lessens the pain of slowly falling behind in watching actual episodes).

There might be some spontaneous singing, possibly poorly executed tap-dancing, if I had Blaine Anderson flirting with me, I won't lie.

I'm so glad people are enjoying the daily dole - I have a few stories I follow that have huge breaks between them (every writer has their own method, etc etc) so I hoped that would jazz people up. Thank you so much for sticking with me! More in just a bit, actually. :)

I laughed absurdly long at the North Korean army comparison. The pity party morphing into the bitch bash.

And somehow, the visual of a wrist pin-cushion on Kurt - I sew, I have seen plenty of wrist pin-cushions, and I have never thought of them as sexy until this moment. But you have made them so.

And I'm just loving the story, and the "we both know we're interested in each other and yet we're still both totally freaking out because, well, just because!" It's the best way to fall in love.
Dec. 15th, 2011 02:06 pm (UTC)
Oh, yay, someone mentioned all of the pity party morphs, lol! When I wrote that back in Nov. about the pin-cushion, I immediately wanted to make one like Kurt would have: black strap, Alexander McQueen-esque skull. :D

Thank you so much for sticking with me and the story, I'm glad to know you're liking it!

Just some thoughts that popped into my head whilst reading the first three chapters:

Ahhhh!! I love me some Papa Burt....and why did I almost type Papa Bear? Weird!

OMG, Rachel....four hours?

Oh no...one word about the fire to Burt and Kurt will never be allowed out of Lima again!!

Yes, Kurt really wanted to go full-out diva on the 911 operator. I'd have paid to see that!

And every time it says Captain Anderson, my brain translates it to Captain America....clearly, I've been wanting to see Darren Criss in tight blue leather.

Wait...there were other firemen there? Obviously, Rachel was seeing things. It's all about Captain Anderson!!

I LOVE this Kurt and Rachel banter!

Not chasing males...is that a real class? Because I think I need to take it.

Unholy love of polka! OMG!! I very nearly fell off my bed at that.

Her Dandy. Dear lord, I can just picture all this in my head. And it's better than Laverne & Shirley!

All this texting....I'm thinking Blaine sent Wes in to interrogate Kurt, sort of a "does he like me" kind of thing.

The rest of chapter two was spent wishing I could pull a Body Thief on Kurt and take his place...so no random thoughts...on to Chapter three!

And the desire to literally switch places with Kurt continued all the way through chapter three...even when faced with the horrid Giovanna. I literally cheered when he lashed out at her!

I am LOVING this, Stoney....I can hardly wait to see the rest. Blaine just makes me melt!
Dec. 15th, 2011 02:08 pm (UTC)
CJ, I loved that little scene with Kurt and the 911 operator so much, can't you hear her read roll and fingersnap and attitude? Just me? okay, then. ;)

...did you just say Blaine in blue leather? *is dead*

HA! Oh, Blaine didn't send the guys in to scope it out, they're tired of Blaine moping and are telling him "HE'S REALLY HERE, DUMMY. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND GET DOWN HERE." :D

I am SO HAPPY you are reading and liking!! Awww, I've missed you, buddy, I know you're busy (and SO PROUD OF YOU, zomg) but you're so fun to flail with. <3

I want them to turn this fic into a movie! I can see it so vividly in my head! :D

Fav line:
Kurt would never have shimmied or danced a jig, he had far too much self-respect for something so childish and unrestrained. So he imagined himself doing it, instead.

I'm so sad I'm already on part 3, there's one more before I'll have to start actually waiting for updates. Maybe I should savour it and wait a bit before reading it?

... No way. Here I come, chapter 4!
Dec. 15th, 2011 07:31 pm (UTC)
Ha, from your lips to Miramax's ear! :D

It's so lovely of you to comment each time, I'm glad you're enjoying it! (Although, sorry about the 24 hour wait between each chapter...) ;)

Are You Actually

Reading this? I'm just curious. Because that's really detail-oriented of you. Feel free to stop reading. But you can see that there's more here, so are you going to keep reading? Really? That's pretty dedicated. I'm impressed. No, really. I'm not being sarcastic, why do you get like that? See, this is the problem I have with your mother - yes. YES. I'm going there. It's time we put all of our cards on the table.

I love you, why are you doing this? After all we've been through? You don't have to be like this. You know, still reading. You could be baking a pie. And then sharing it with me.
